The Unsinkable Walker Bean by Aaron Renier
4.0

Whimsical. Very nice illustrations that take you to the settings. I'm not huge on the character designs, but there's nothing negative I have to say. The environments, creatures, and visual storytelling are all strong. Entertaining throughout. The story is self-contained, and though I know there's a second installment, I feel satisfied having read this and don't really feel a need to seek out the second (though if I came across it, I'd give it a shot.) Very solid--storytelling, art, compulsivity to keep reading are all there.

Nothing moved me to rate this a five, but I will keep my copy and read again in the future. Follow the nautical journeys of a headstrong kid on his own as he meets friends and frenemies on the way. The story is a little bit lofty but handled well. The protagonist's backstory is hinted at but never fully explained. Touching, nostalgic, dreamy. A little bit trite, but comforting. Recommended.
