Betrayal by Pippa DaCosta

4.0

This book may have been one of the more surprising ones I've read all year. From the description I thought it would be a fun, light, easy read (which is was), but I was also surprised by how much I ended up caring about the characters and investing in their choices. At first Cale seemed like a run of the mill brooding tough guy but once you realize the events in his past that made him that way and affect the narrative even now, he turns out to be much more three-dimensional. Likewise with Fran and One Thousand And One. To be completely honest, I started out not expecting much. As I continued to read I thought, "This is pretty good for a cheesy, melodramatic space opera." And by the time I was finished with the book, I thought, "This is pretty good science fiction, full stop." I'm really looking forward to checking out the next book in the series, and seeing what else this author has done.
