This book was not bad by any means, but it felt very familiar, like I’ve read it many times before. The story is very predictable, but I liked spending time with Lily and Kath. If you haven’t already read a lot of lesbians in the 1950s, or if you want a story about lesbian nightlife from that era that isn’t full of violence, then I would recommend this book. It definitely contributes the story of a Chinese American girl to the canon of mid century lesbian fiction, but very little of Lily’s experience felt new to me.
Moderate: Racism
Minor: Homophobia, Sexism
