Bloodline by Claudia Gray
4.0

The first Star Wars book I have read since the prequel trilogy was coming out. Gray does an excellent job handling what Lucas failed at in Epi. III, political commentary with nuance and a fast paced story with many interweaving parts.

Leia is fantastic in this, using the knowledge she has gained through experience, she pulls no punches in the politcal arena or any area where she knows the job must get done. Seeing her, Han, and the New Republic through this story helps GREATLY in setting the stage for what we see in Epi. VII. Gray also diversifies the cast through Bloodline in ways I do not recall the dozens of Star Wars EU books I read in my middle school years taking on, although that could be because I wasn't explicitly looking for it. Still, I feel like the sheer amount of female characters would have stood out to me compared to reading The Han Solo Adventures/Lando Calrissian Adventures/etc.

My only complaint is something that I'm not certain can be avoided within the Star Wars subgenre, given the need to keep the pace fast and the world building is always a bit loose. There are a few sections where I distinctly had that feeling of "the author is just telling us information instead of *showing* it to us" but these sections didn't last long enough to bother me, and I did truly enjoy the quick pace of this book. For fellow Star Wars fans who are just getting back into the universe since the release of The Force Awakens, I recommend highly!
