Midnight's Children
by Salman Rushdie
A fascinating book. The narrator on the audiobook was particularly entertaining, having voices for every character, and did a remarkable job of capturing the emotions of the novel. As many others have said, this is not a particularly fast or easy read (or listen), but it does keep you engaged. The voice of Saleem is that of a scatterbrained character who wants to get out so much information to the reader, but has to keep backtracking and explain more of the broader picture to better enable the reader to understand the full gravity of his different situations. In that regard it's incredibly engaging and frustrating at once.
I would recommend it to others with the caveat that those who are familiar with the first 30-40 years of Indian independence and subsequent history will enjoy it much more than those who are unfamiliar with the subcontinent's 20th century.
