Golden Boys Beware by Hannah Capin
2.0

Really struggled between 2 and 3 stars--might go back and change my rating later. I was so ready to really love GBB and I think I went in with my expectations too high. A gorey, glam, teenage vigilante story? Sign me all the way up. And Capin definitely delivered on gore and glam. There were also some *amazing* gems of weird, wonderful imagery and turn of phrase. Describing the protagonist's shiny new BMW as "slut-red" is just one example of those flashes of brilliance. That said, the writing started feeling repetitive and smug by page 100 and the story had gone just utterly batshit by page 200. Batshit is okay--this is a rape revenge retelling of Shakespeare, after all--but I did start really rolling my eyes towards the end. And Jade would have been a really kickass main character if the author hadn't felt the need to tell us 27,000 times that she is a kickass main character. There are only so many times a protagonist can call herself "the queen" of a school she's been at for three days before it gets grating. Trigger warning for sexual assault and (lots of) violence.
