Second Foundation
by Isaac Asimov
In this, the third (sort of) book in The Foundation story, Asimov brings together the story of the First and Second foundations, having them work with and against each other as they try to get Hari Seldon's plan back on track. It's easy to forget as you read these books, that they were written in the 1950s (or earlier). Of the three, this one's mid-century roots showed most clearly, particular through the Gidget-esque spunkiness of Arcadia Darrell. It's easy to imagine here gallivanting around the galaxy in a pleated skirt and sweater set, doing her darnedest to save The Foundation and live up to her grandmother's heroic reputation. Still, kind of cool that there were actually some female characters in the series -- and rather smart ones, at that. Oh -- and there's a librarian in it. A walking, talking, space-ship flying stereotype of a male librarian, but still -- a librarian!
I may read some more of the books in The Foundation cannon at some point, but I think I'm going to give them a break for a while.
