Ascendance Trilogy: The False Prince, the Runaway King, the Shadow Throne
by Jennifer A. Nielsen
This was a fun story to listen to driving across the country -- good for engaging both kids and adults. Some violence, but we felt it was still appropriate for our crowd of young listeners, which I appreciated. My little boys wanted to keep listening, and my husband and I did too. The characters were good and the plot was engaging. I loved that the girls were strong characters. There were more male characters, but the female characters were really wonderful.
My one complaint -- and it's not a big one -- is that the main character is constantly in these crazy intense situations, full of stress and tension, and he always comes out of it swinging. Like, literally, he should be pretty near dead and he's up and going. I realize that it's part of his plucky, tough, adventurous character, but it ends up being pretty ridiculous that this fifteen-year-old boy is still going, and going, and going at some point. Not completely believable, but ah well.
Mostly just fun and engaging. Would recommend for sure.
