Games We Played by Shawne Steiger

4.0

This is not a typical genre for me as it usually makes me very uncomfortable. I hate to see (or read) about people being hated on so much by racists, trolls, bigots, and the like. It hurts my heart and I tend to shy away. However, this one caught my attention.

With similar vibes (but completely different story) of Jodi Picoult's Small Great Things, Games We Played really hits those points that are intended to make us uneasy. Rachel is a local actress, who also happens to be Jewish and gay. She starts receiving hate messages which worsen into threatening bodily harm and goes home to her parents for a while. Childhood friend Stephen is back from the military with absolutely nothing waiting for him. So he looks her up. Did I mention he grew up with a [proud] Nazi grandfather? Their beliefs expectedly clash. Will Rachel speak up?

What follows is an uncomfortably relevant, as sad as that is to say, story of what is still unbelievably current in our culture. This story will make you squirm, feel ashamed, and uneasy and it should. Racism and antisemitism do not belong here.

I received a copy of this book as a stop on a blog tour. All opinions are my own.
