A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
by James Joyce
This was my first time reading Joyce and I went in a little intimidated after hearing how difficult some of his works can be. I actually did find the first chapter of the book a bit confusing, and a little frustrating, but about halfway through the second chapter I had gotten my bearings and fell into the flow of the prose.
I enjoyed this book, and I'm eager to read more of Joyce's work. It's not the typical plot heavy story, and a lot of time is spent in the narrators head, remembering, thinking, imagining, and I found this sort of perspective fresh, interesting, and informative. Now I understand why Joyce is so celebrated. He definitely brought something new to literature.
