Freedom’s Ghost
Eliot Pattison
At the outset, let me just say, that this tale is a storytelling masterpiece. I’m in awe of the author’s ability to mine the historical record and pluck out nuggets of data. Then, like an alchemist of old, turns those nuggets into gems of creativity. One example is the character of Crispus Attucks. He is fleshed out in a way that conveys the emotions and fears of that anxious, uncertain time. I could go on; John Hancock, John Glover, Major-General Gage – all are beautifully placed to interact with the fictional characters who drive the narrative. Wrap all of that lovely character development into a series of mysteries that keep Duncan busy, and what happens is the pages seem to turn themselves, keeping the reader entwined in the action. Freedom’s Ghost, while it does bring to life the run-up to the rebellion, it also highlights the plight of slavery and the unscrupulous, brutal manner of the bounty hunters who hunt runaways. All in all, I was captivated by this book and look forward to reading more of Duncan McCallum as the Revolution unfolds. 5 Stars.
