A King so Cold by Ella Fields
3.0

It's borderline scary how easily my mind & emotions were manipulated throughout this book, and I loved it.

Authors sometimes have too much power over their readers, & this book is the perfect example of that for Ella Fields. Every word, every turn of the page, every new chapter, illicited a new feeling, or idea. My emotions were manipulated without warning, changed faster than a person could blink several times & made me question my sanity. I thought I was sure of one thing, only to be sure the next second it was completely wrong.

To be honest, this was a slow start for me. It took me over a month with it on my kindle, pushing through the first couple chapters to actually be intriqued. But, once I was, it was game on... I couldn't stop.

The plot starts a year after Queen Audra's husband betrayed her in some way, after which he was memory wiped & exiled. She gets word he is remarrying, goes into psycho mode, & gets together some of her people to crash the wedding with her. All the while, her fuck buddy Zadicus waits naked in her bed, literally just waiting, for her to get back. He's like a little lost puppy plaything.

Audra is not your typical MC Female. Not "likable", she is a raging psycho, a self proclaimed monster, with homicidal tendencies.

She pushes moms holding crying sick baby's to the ground.
“May I please ask for your blessing?” Her lips wobbled as her soiled hand patted the babe’s back. “My daughter, she be sick, coughing like that of an Ergin.”
I glanced at her smudged brown face, my lip curling as my hand twitched and sent her stumbling back over the dirt.
“The cursed do not bless,” I said as her infant wailed.
Whimpering and muttering about the devil, she scrambled away.

She somehow has the ability to act all evil-queen even when her heart gets stomped on. (props)
“So trial me,” I said, desperation growing. “I’ll explain everything.”
She smiled at the book Truin began riffling through. “You seem to have forgotten one important detail, husband.” She might’ve been smiling, but her eyes were again vacant.
“Only monsters reside here.”

Her "unlikability" only made me want to read more. It was a breath of fresh air reading a F lead that didn't feel compelled to change, or have a man chasing to "fix her".
Her husband, the King, fell in love with her despite going into the marriage hating her, never tried to "fix" her wicked ways... though were they really her wicked ways?
It's hard to say how she really feels, she's confused & dutiful, & when duty comes before personal needs, the internal thought process is a lot less revealing than it would be otherwise.

Now, to the emotional manipulation
Spoilers are a hard no for me, so I can't go into much details. However, I've already mentioned how dark & twisty Audra is. She's a borderline socio. So, you can see how I was shocked when her story began elliciting an emotional response from me. SEVERAL TIMES.
No, this isn't a story about changing your evil ways or being rescued & brought into the "light", but Audra has a character arc all the same, & it's one that had me stressed the f*ck out

Overall - 3.75 stars. I'd give 4, but the slow start is stopping me. I fully recommend, & can't wait to see what happens in book 2!
