Honestly this story is overall fine, but it ended up with a lot of disjointed clues sprinkled throughout Scottish history info-dumps and it just overall wasn't a fun read. Don't get me wrong, I expect there to be 'taught' things about whatever the setting is in a children's book, it just took up a big chunk of the book imo to the point where the mystery itself was super disjointed. There was also just a heck of a lot of animal abuse in this novel, which was pretty off putting for me.
Graphic: Animal cruelty
Moderate: Animal death
