All God's Children by Aaron Gwyn

5.0

One of those lucky finds, just grabbed this off the library "new releases" shelf while picking up another book and... I may have found my favorite book of the year so far.

This is a story about the founding of Texas, and also about three people. Duncan Lemmons, a young man from Arkansas, leaves home to find a new life after his preacher father discovers him with another man. Cecelia, a slave from Virginia, tries again and again to escape her owners, moving from the master's house in Virginia down to the cotton fields in Louisiana. Finally, there's frontiersman Sam Fisk, who both of them will develop a strong bond with.

As Texas changes from a contested land of wilderness to a civilized corner of the United States, these three find themselves losing the freedom they have found far from the States; how will they keep it, and who will try to take it away from them?
