TL;DR: If you were coming into it thinking it's more historical horror, I think you'll be disappointed. BUT, if you like historical romance with pining and childhood love trope, I think you'll enjoy this.
I'm sorry! I tried! 😩 The writing is beautiful, and the setting just as beautiful. But I just don't think this kind of book was for me. It's just very hard to take the main characters seriously, being hung up on a childhood crush. Maybe if I read this when I was a teenager or in my early 20's I would like this more. All the romance so far being them as 13 year olds just felt a bit weird. Since this has mexican cinema vibes it's a bit melodramatic, however it just doesn't work for me with this story.
Also, I was definitely thinking this was going to have more horror. Maybe the horror comes later, but so far it's been a bit slow. But not creepy atmospheric slow. So far it's just a lot of internal monologues talking about the same thing over and over.
I had to DNF because I realized every time I put the book down I was almost dreading picking it up again. So much so that my Libby loan on it is almost up and i'm not even halfway done with the book.
I have another book of hers that I want to start so I'm hoping the next one is for me!
