Africa: A Biography of the Continent by John Reader

challenging informative slow-paced

It's a little dry, I have to admit. But it's a very good look at African history without an attempt to excuse the colonialism that wreaked havoc. It obviously doesn't cover everything, as it's trying to give an overview of an entire continent, but it's fairly thorough for what it is.
