The Storm of Echoes by Christelle Dabos

Did not finish book. Stopped at 70%.
This is fucking INSUFFERABLE. I have switched between physical reading and audiobook to get through this, but even at 2.5x speed on audio I am bored out of my mind.

Everything that I loved about the first two books is completely missing in this one. There is no solid plot and the confusion and monotony of the third book has carried over and multiplied. The magic, the whimsy, the immersion into a world that is full of fun and mystery and surprise is completely missing and in its place is the most authoritarian slog of a setting.

Every interaction with Thorne is marked by specifying that it’s ~so romantic~ when it is absolutely nothing of the sort. The book keeps trying to shove it down our throats that he’s changed and warmed up but in reality he is just a cold, insufferable, miserable, loveless human. If the things he did and said were romantic, it would not have to be stated as such and it feels like the narration is making excuses for his lack of character development.

I finished 70% of this and I just don’t believe that the final 30% is going to resolve any of these issues and I just don’t care anymore.
