Burning Roses
by S.L. Huang
This novella is both a fairytale retelling as well as a retelling of the mythology of Chang-E, the goddess of the moon. For the most part, this worked surprisingly well for me. It's about two older queer women who have made mistakes and are trying to rectify them--to various results. It's about grief and how parents can pass on that same legacy of pain onto their children. It's about forgiveness, too, and talking the hard road to making things right. For being so short, the author really packed a lot into this. While I don't think this needed to be a full-length novel, I do wish it were slightly longer. But honestly, even as is, I really enjoyed this.
