The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw
3.0
Here's another dark fairytale to feed the soul!
I love the way mermaids are depicted in this darker version as lethal beings. The macabre games for children, individuals assuming surgical roles, and the peculiar, almost cultish ambiance of a small town all contribute to the richness of this narrative. The vivid descriptions of slicing people open, while potentially skin-crawling, were executed with a seamless intensity.
In general, even though this book introduces some unsettling elements, I found the overall reading experience quite enjoyable.
