Writing can be clunky and some of the phrasing is used way too often (Xie Lian doesn't know whether to laugh or cry as a reaction a lot). I saw the first season of the anime, and this book covers the entirety of that without anything extra except XL's internal thoughts, which do add context. Not especially gripping, and though the chemistry is real, not much romance happens.
