Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked The World by Pénélope Bagieu
4.0
As a giant history nerd, I love reading about any time period or person I know little about. And of course I love reading about women throughout history, especially those who I didn’t know anything about. So Brazen was an absolutely amazing gift to receive from my favorite cinnamon roll Marwah for Christmas! Thanks, Marwah!
I don’t read much graphic nonfiction, and I think that needs to change because Brazen is exactly the kind of book I like. In Brazen, Pénélope Bagieu gives brief but insightful and funny biographies of 29 different ‘rebel’ women throughout history. I liked that Bagieu’s selection of women is fairly diverse and intersectional. There are some fairly obvious picks (Nellie Bly and Josephine Baker both show up), but I had never heard of Jesselyn Radack or Betty Davis. Now I will definitely want to go read more about so many of these ladies, which I think is the goal of this type of books. Brazen loses a point for me for not having a detailed bibliography where I can learn more, but Bagieu does include some sources at the end of each chapter when relevant.
As far as the artwork and coloring goes, Brazen is splendid. Bagieu’s artwork is superb, and I absolutely love the coloring. It has a very art pop feel.
If you’re in the mood for both badass historical women and graphic nonfiction, Brazen should be your next read! 100% recommended!
