The Flash, Vol. 1: Move Forward by Francis Manapul
4.0

The art is some of the best in the DCnU. Of the fifty-two volumes that established the DCnU, this series' art is easily in the top five. It's clever. They use a wide variety of techniques. The art is perfect for the character and story. Every issue is full of some of the most creative layouts in the New 52. Issue four stands out as especially fantastic.

The strength of this book is in how Manapaul and Buccellato work together as a team. The art and story work perfectly together.. This title continues that current trend of mixing Silver Age elements in with a darker Modern story. I feel that it works especially well here, because they strategically use stylistic elements from the 1960s, which helps keep the book balanced tonally.

Under a different team, this would be a two or three star book. Barry is missing some characterization and is just kind of bland. I don't love the change to Barry's background. The pacing is a little off.

This doesn't mean the story is necessarily bad. Initially, I was pretty skeptical when I heard that Iris and Barry would not be together in the new series. However, Iris and Patty, Barry's new girlfriend, are two of the better written love interests in the New 52. While the name is a little silly, I thought Mob Rule was a pretty interesting new character.
