So I got an ad for this on my kindle and it had crazy reviews and was described as “un-put-downable”. Did we read the same book?! Nothing exciting happens for the first 60% of the book. The pace wasn’t fast or suspenseful. In fact I put the book down many times! It only became a page-turner for the climax, which is a supremely low bar for a book in the thriller genre lol. The main character was weird too. Like how are you gonna write an FBI agent that *never* reports to or contacts her superiors?! Why even make her an fbi agent?? Very weird. Also the whole premise of going undercover makes no sense for a crime like this. The fbi totally had jurisdiction and could have just gone in on the books. 10+ missing people isn’t exactly a one person job to unravel either…
ALSO how did the dude dying on her porch in the first couple chapters of the book not have to do WITH ANYTHING?!?!?
Book just overall fell super flat, not much redeeming about it. Don’t feel compelled to continue the series.

Plot summary:

Emma is an FBI agent. She was on desk duty for 6 months after going off the rails on an undercover assignment. Her first job back in the field is to go undercover in a small town to investigate 10+ missing people with 2 bodies. She meets Jake, a charismatic bartender and they hit it off. Like the true professional she is, she begins a relationship with him. You know at least this book is realistic in that all the cops and the fbi agent suck at their jobs lmao. Emma gets this one theory, that the chief of police is the perpetrator, and then spends all her time trying to confirm her theory. Yeah sure! That’s totally how police work goes… all this crap I don’t care to recall happens. She is convinced it’s the police chief. Then Jake goes missing and there’s a bunch of blood at the bar. Emma is investigating a dilapidated house near the cabin she’s staying in. The police say they checked it out but of course they missed the secret room. The secret room with a door that locks behind Emma and contains all the missing people, dead and taxidermied.  Nice one Emma. And then Jake arrives. Yup, it’s Jake, the one person she never suspected. Did I mention the stellar investigative work on the behalf of the cops and fbi??🙄 he holds her captive, explains that his life was shit and he is basically trying to rewrite his childhood memories with happier ones, hence the dead bodies propped up in scenes. She tried to send off an email w pics of the basement but it wouldn’t go through. Eventually it did and her fbi contacts rescue her with the aid of the police right after she sets the house on fire and falls off the roof with Jake. The end. Don’t find out who the guy who died on her porch is, don’t hear anything about Jake or his sentencing. The end.
lameeeeeeee.
