Nick Offerman is a delight to consume, whether as his charming bravado as Ron Swanson, in his warm-hearted stage comedy or his reverent book penning. In book form, the man has a way with words and a wealth of mind nuggets that provoke thought and internal growth.
"Gumption" chronicles Offerman's favorite Americans throughout history who have demonstrated just that - gumption. From this country's infancy came the lasting greatness of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, continuing with Frederick Douglass and Teddy Roosevelt, and on to modern trailblazers such as Carol Burnett and Willie Nelson.
It's a delight to hear from a man with so much American pride and, like his Ron Swanson character, a blue collar lifestyle discuss what makes this country a privilege to walk upon. It's a true breath of fresh air, especially since he's an actor with an actress for a wife. You don't see this often, but when you do, soak up everything you can. Read a book in the comforts of nature, take a break from the screens overtaking your life and, for goodness sake, have an original thought and make something for yourself.
This book is food for the curious soul, a reexamination of our basic values as people. I'm a better man having read it.
