The Winner's Kiss
by Marie Rutkoski
Worse than the first, better than the second, still just as mediocre as when I started. I don't know what I expected when I decided to finish reading a series that I deemed "just okay" instead of an "oh my god that was amazing" or a "holy shit this is so bad it's hilarious."
This is better that the second book in that it has a plot. Things actually happen, even if they are still duller than dishwater when it comes to tension.
Honestly, the only thing as far as surprises in strategy or outcome that made me mildly remark, "Hm. Okay, cool," was the poisoned tiles at the end.
There is nothing special about this. I would recommend several other things long before I recommended this to anyone. I would probably even recommend some of my least favorite books over this one because, as I often say, sometimes it's worse to be mediocre and boring than it is to be spectacularly terrible.
