I did not particularly enjoy the geopolitics of this book -
traveling outside of the previously known world is a great opportunity for world building, but the fact that each island was more one-dimensional than a Hogwarts house was disappointing. The whole deal of "pass the battle test, pass the wisdom test, pass the luck test" was tired before it even began, and I refuse to believe that entire societies would be so one-note.

Additionally, the island-hopping quest was needlessly confusing - half the time I did not know where they were (the islands are not on the map inside the cover). Aside from that, most of that quest seemed to have very little impact on the overarching plot, and felt more like a distraction and a waste of pages.
