The Magician King by Lev Grossman

5.0

Definitely loved this. While the first book was an homage to Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia, this book really brought new elements to the table and felt like its own story. I loved how it introduced back-alley magic in a world of exclusive magic schools and learning about Julia's struggle of searching for magic after getting a taste of it. While Grossman is taking inspiration from classic fantasy novels, he is building his own unique story and world. I also love that this book wasn't predictable and didn't fall into common fantasy tropes.
