Revisiting this book for the first time since loving it in the early 2000s and so thrilled that it holds up to my memory.
Written ten years prior to Ready Player One and about 4-5 years after Stardust, this book is such a fun middle grade adventure and dive into the land of RPGs and Virtual Reality while also being a fantasy adventure once “inside” the game.
The MC is dynamic and smart and the cast of supporting characters are both whimsical and threatening when they need to be. It delivers the experience of video game/ D&D like feelings through this teenager’s decisions and asks you to believe in how she will learn from her failure as much as her success.
Enamored with this book even now, two decades later 💜
