The first book was just OK for me, I really wanted to get to the third book to read about Hadley. But this second book pissed me off so much, I don’t feel optimistic about continuing to Hadley‘s book, I know I’ll end up so annoyed. Rarely do I dislike a book that overall people seem to really like. Yet the series seems to be one of them.
One of my biggest grievances about book one was how the very first chapter, which was a flashback, confused the entire beginning of the book for the reader. It happened again with this book! The first chapter was so ridiculous that I had so much trouble connecting what was happening. What person, sees another person covered in blood, with a weapon in their hand, and clearly looking like they just committed a violent crime, and you just take the murder weapon from them? Why on earth Lincoln accepted the knife from her in the very beginning I will never understand. At that point they weren’t even Close Friends, they were barely acquaintances. And then, after accepting the murder weapon, you blackmail her into leaving town and never coming back. What the flying fuck?
Another thing that really upset me about this book in the first half was how everyone treated Faye. Everyone was so incredibly mean to her, her sister, all of the Foxxes, everyone else in the town, were so ridiculously bitchy and hateful and mean. I honestly didn’t like any characters in this book, they were also hateful and mean that I couldn’t stand them. Maggie was so nasty and disrespectful the entire time. I kept holding onto the fact that she didn’t know why her sister left, to protect her and their mom for covering up the murder. And then to find out that Maggie knew the entire time was a gut punch. You mean you were there when the guy got murdered, knew your mom was there, knew your sister showed up afterwards, and then she covered it up and left right afterwards? And then she treated her sister like absolute dog shit the entire time.
I couldn’t get behind Lincoln and Faye ending up together after he was so goddamn awful mean to her. From the very first chapter, he accepted the murder weapon, basically agreed to be complicit and covering up a murder, and then blackmailed her to leave. Who the fuck does that? You help someone cover up a murder and then blackmail them to leave town and never come back?!
I was definitely shocked that their mom was in witness protection the entire time, and that she was alive. Yet it felt like another misguided attempt to create hardship for the characters yet logistically made no sense in the storyline overall.
I will not be continuing the series.
