Waiting for the Long Night Moon: Stories
by Amanda Peters
A collection of stories that captures various topics about living as an Indigenous person on Turtle Island. There are many stories about the atrocities of boarding schools where children were stolen from their families, forbidden from engaging with their culture, treated cruelly, and abused. Other topics include access to water, protesting, being unhoused, disconnection from family, substance misuse, injustice, tradition, and more.
My favorite story was "The Story of the Crow (a retelling)" which is the origin story of how the crow became black. It was unlike the rest of the collection, but the point was clear.
I enjoyed many of the other stories, but some of them felt similar.
