Sugar and Spite by Gail D. Villanueva
5.0
I just finished the audiobook for SUGAR AND SPITE, and I recommend it highly! (This story is pitch-perfect middle-grade voice for my own 3rd-grade reader, and I can't wait to share it with her.)
Gail Villanueva's enemies to friends plot made this a compelling read, and this book is perfect for kids who feel they're struggling to connect with their peers or fit in. I suspect many readers will appreciate the nuanced way both characters were allowed to be flawed with room for growth.
Fair warning: I ugly cried (in a good way) throughout the lovely author's notes at the end. Also, there's an awesome recipe for Yema Balls included, which is such a cool personal touch!
