Moonlight Love and Witchcraft by Vaela Denarr, Micah Iannandrea
Did not finish book. Stopped at 28%.
I was excited for this queer polyam fantasy but was immediately disappointed and let down by it and ended up DNFing it because I couldn't get myself to read another page. A 25 year old woman is written like a middle school girl. She is introduced to a couple and immediately decides she wants to date them without getting to know them at all and without knowing if they are monogamous or not. I'm 140 pages in and they have yet to have any conversation that actually gets the characters to know each other. Instead it's just this juvenile sounding girl giggling and tripping over her words and being unable to talk to them. It seems like the phrase gay panic is being used to excuse the fact that it's completely inappropriate to decide to date a couple without knowing if they are polyam and open to that. It feels very much like the opposite of unicorn hunting - instead of a couple seeking a third, it's a third seeking a couple. I was hoping for a respectful, beautiful and consensual story and ended up having to DNF out of sheer secondhand embarrassment and annoyance at the characters.
