my final french seminar in college was a semester long close-reading of multiple translations of madame bovary and other works/reflections from flaubert and the time after its inception. his intentional “writing about nothing” juxtaposed with the HARSH irony and melodramatic tales within had me kicking my feet in excitement each week during class discussion, especially bc i took this course with Marina van Zuylen, a prof who opened my mind in both the smallest and biggest ways like nobody else ever has!
