Nightshade
by Andrea Cremer
Yowza! This was a fairly sexually and emotionally charged book for a YA novel. Yeah, all YA novels are emotionally charged but even though there was no actually sex I was fairly surprised how far the author went. I’m not complaining. It worked with the novel. But I’m pretty sure it will make some parents nervous. Now, now, to those parents: Calla at least always tries to keep her mind and body in check. So I guess she’s a good example of how you’d want your kid to try to be.
I loved the mythology of this book. I love the werewolves and I think I love them even more because of how they are NOT werewolves but instead Guardians. Confused? You’re meant to be for a little of the book. So I won’t elaborate.
Another awesome quality of the book? That confusion that the author lets you have for the first chunk of the book. You’re thrown into this world and given barely enough info to follow along and at first that is frustrating as hell but then when you start to delve into Cremer’s world you just keep wanting to swim deeper and deeper.
Cremer gives you characters that you really, really love to hate. I felt so strongly about some of the characters. You really want to see them brought down. I’m hoping by book 3 that’s what happens.
And of course, there is a love triangle. Who will you pick? Shea or Ren?
