A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas

3.0

Reading ACOFAS for the second time was... weird. I mean I love the ACOTAR series, am totally smitten with ACOMAF, but as for this book... I know the first time I read it it felt better, and I am not sure why that changed, but it changed so much I had to write a new review.

So after ACOWAR everyone is back at Velaris, recuperating, adjusting, being happy or in some cases downright miserable and rude. More on that later. Feyre and Rhys try to enjoy their time together but ofcourse there are things to be done that absolutely cannot wait, like visits to other courts to uphold the peace, paperwork to keep the citizens of velaris happy etc.

“High Lady of the Night Court, Defender of the Rainbow and the… Desk.”

And even though women are equal to men in all things in velaris, we find feyre doing household chores, going shopping, doing almost all the paperwork and in rare occasions doing some painting. The talking and cooperating with other courts and all those things are done solely by Rhys and the other males… So that was something that almost kinda screamed not as equal as claimed to be.

Then the parts where Feyre always doubts, always reminds us that yes, she has a fortune, like literally seas of money, but it feels wrong to spend it on herself while so many other people are struggling and have nothing. Seems to me that if there is really so much money in your trove it shouldn’t be a problem spending it on yourself AND also helping those who need it.

Now, let’s talk about the seggs and romantic scenes… for some reason they didn’t quite get to me as much as ACOMAF’s. The amount of times the mention of mate, my mate occurs in the books… too many to count and at first it didn’t really bother me. Until my brain started to read mate in an Australian way… believe me it sounds funny but it is such a dealbreaker.

And then there are Nesta and Elain. I am still not sure what to think of both. One is rude, avoids all contact as much as she can, chooses to be alone and just drink all the time. If you ask me she has a serious case of PTSD and someone should really help her with that. The other has a mate (you read that in an Australian way didn’t you?) whom she doesn’t care for, doesn’t acknowledge and doesn’t even deem good enough to allow him to simply talk to her or be around her. I am seriously thinking that Elain will not accept the bond with Lucien, but we’ll see. Poor Lucien…

Mor, Cassian and Amren… well, Cassian should indeed grow some balls and just get on with Nesta and really talk to her, listen to her and see what’s going on for what it is. Amren is adjusting to being merely a High Fae, which is difficult because now she gets to enjoy all kinds of fancy and tasty food which she also needs to eliminate… Which got me really wondering… what exactly happened to the blood she ate before? Like, was it just absorbed into her and she never needed to even pee? And Mor… well, let’s just say that I am waiting for this great and mighty truth teller to finally accept her own truth and stop being too ashamed of it to even share it with those closest to her.

“Pathetic. Cowardly and pathetic. Truth is your gift. Truth is your curse.”

And then there is Tamlin. I know I said that he just isn’t to my liking, and don’t get me wrong, he still isn’t. But the way he is in this book, how he handles everything and copes (or rather doesn’t cope) with everything is just not ok. He doesn’t deserve that, even after all he has done.

Ok so that was a rant I had to get out. Quite different from my other reviews so far, I know. I do have to say, it is not that I didn’t like the book. I do like it, it only fell short for me this second time reading it compared to the other books. I am really curious on how A Court of Silver Flames will be, the entire reason I started rereading ACOTAR.
