While the romance was a bit of a letdown, the rest of the book was amazing so that’s another win for T. Kingfisher.
To start, this book had an amazing cast. All of them felt extremely real and grounded in the world. Marra was a super relatable MC and I really enjoyed following her and her sense of humour. The rest of our main cast was also amazing and had excellent dynamics. I think the relationships between them were SUPER well written and compelling, I could very easily buy into all of them being life or death loyal to each other. I think the only time it suffered was in the romance. While I could buy into Marra and Fenris being close friends, I struggled to commit to and follow the romance. It just didn’t grab me the way Kingfisher’s romances normally do. I think my favourite relationship was Marra and Kania’s relationship. I think their sisterly relationship from childhood and being very fraught, but growing into an understanding and respect for each other felt very well written and developed. I really enjoyed reading about them.
I really liked the world building for this story. I think it was well balanced with the rest of the story and it never felt like I was getting needless info dumps. I was also very tickled with the magic and seeing how it worked and was explained. Dust-wives and godmothers and the ghosts and all of it, I just LOVED reading about. I would love to see more of this world.
I think my favourite part of the story was how the book played with themes of womanhood and sisterly relationships. I think Marra had such a unique view on the world, having been so sheltered by the convent. Watching her learn how woman have to navigate the world and how to claim her own power in it was an excellent story. Especially her learning to navigate the world and help woman claim their power to topple abusive and cruel men. It was such a satisfying story. Mixed with the more subtle exploration of Marra and Kania’s relationship, I think it was an excellent story of womanhood and the strength and protectiveness of sisters and family.
Overall this was a super good book and I really enjoyed my time reading it. I’m looking forward to my next T. Kingfisher book and hope I can keep enjoying her stories!
