The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

5.0

these behemoth of a book has it all: characterization, beautiful writing, an engaging plot, twists, and such deep conversations of justice and righteousness. it was one i knew i’d love when i finally picked it up and i’m glad i got around to it this year.
Edmond Dantes is indicted for a crime he didn’t commit and you watch his transformation from an innocent, loving individual, to a vigilante engaged in providing divine intervention to those who wronged him years ago. the character arc here was one of my favorites i’ve ever seen in literature. there were so many interesting conversations of who gets to decide right and wrong, the justice system as it existed back then and how it failed its people, and vengeance.
there were parts of the book that felt like a drag, but it was completely overpowered by the other parts of the novel that moved it along quickly and tugging you back and forth between your ideas of the plot and the characters. overall, such an incredible book. i was highly impressed with this one and completely understand its esteem for readers.
