Gallant
by V.E. Schwab
I enjoyed this standalone novel very much, perhaps more so because there was no sequel.
The beginning was a bit slow with Olivia, who is mute, living in an orphanage where no one can sign so she is frequently forgotten and mistreated. The one thing that grabbed me right from the start, however, was that Olivia can see ghouls. They walk the halls and hide under beds and generally just watch Olivia.
As the story progresses, and Olivia goes to Galant, her family home, the setting became more sinister and creepy. The shuttering of the house against the night and Matthew’s unending pruning of the colorless vines snaking their way up the roses was captivating. I wanted to learn more about the history of Gallant and the Prior family.
Finally, when Olivia enters the other world, the world of death, the story truly comes alive. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and while I was a bit underwhelmed at the loss of one of the characters, the ending solidified the story as a whole.
