Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle by Betty MacDonald

4.0

Hi, illustrator of my much-loved 80s collection of mrs. P-W books. This character definitely does not look like you've drawn her. She has "goldy brown" skin. She tells her very first visitor, Mary Lou, who has run away to escape doing dishes, that she dreams of having blonde hair, blue eyes, and apple-blossom skin. There are some fascinating accents transcribed, too, which I think are racial cues. But nope. Everyone in my copy is drawn lily white. Will paw through the rest of the series and see if there are other subversive gems in here. (holler, 1947 publication date!)
Also, the author bio says that MacDonald worked as an engineer's secretary, a photograph-tinter, a fur model, an advertiser, a chain letter office manager, and a records-keeper for a rabbit grower. THEY DON'T MAKE JOBS LIKE THEY USED TO. I wish she were my grandmother. She AND mrs piggle wiggle.
