The Return of the Native
by Thomas Hardy
I was hoping on the reread I could give this novel the extra star; however I find my opinion basically unchanged.
The Return of the Native is my recommended starting point for Hardy, it has all the essence of a good Hardy novel, but it isn't too heavy handed in any direction. Essentially if you don't like this novel, then I can't see you loving any of Hardy's novels.
This novel contains my two favourite Hardy characters; the not quite goddess, not quite human Eustacia Vye and the wild and mysterious Diggory Venn. I love how Eustacia could at any moment ease her troubles, but refuses to because of pride and a sense of moral repentance.
On the down side, it takes Hardy a little too long to set everything up. So a solid enjoyable 4 stars it is.
