I thought this would be a mystery/fantasy a la Harry Potter but it's really just a mystery set in an English boarding school environment. Not to say it's not good - the mystery part was interesting and the suspense scenes were suspense-y. The main characters were good but with so much more potential, the secondary were a little stereotypical. I think some of these kinks will be ironed out in the sequel.
Middle graders would like this one because it's realistically scary with antagonists who will resort to anything to keep their secret. The only distraction was that Emmy is supposed to be 11-12 years old and as the story reads she, and her friends, seem older than that. It jarred me whenever they mentioned her age because I was imagining her as 15-16 years old.
