Anne's House of Dreams
by L.M. Montgomery
2.8☆
Sadly, the magic is lost. The avonlea folk are gone, Anne meets new people and while they are nice, they aren't as charming as even Phil was.
To my disappointment, Anne as a wife becomes like everyone else. Sure she still has her fancies, but she no longer works, lives alone and does nothing until she has children (what a delight, gave her life meaning) but even then she doesn't even really spend her time with her son because she has Susan care for him? Like she has nowhere else to go, not to mention that Gilbert is kind of useless as a dad which was sad. I thought if ANYONE in this time period would be a little different, they would. But they're not. They turned into a very regular, boring couple who doesn't do much with their lives.
Gilbert behaves like Jem is Anne's child only, and Anne is preoccupied with matchmaking other people. Also, Cornelia getting married too was so lame because she was the only icon left in this thing.
I UNDERSTAND at this point Lucy was already suffering in her marriage to the priest, but the books were always hopeful and beautiful despite that. Now they just turned religious, traditional and drama-like.
It's always a joy to read her prose but it wasn't enough to salvage the bitter taste in my mouth this time. I will finish the rest of the books, but it ended at Anne of the Island for me.
