Captain America, Vol. 2: The Extremists by Chuck Austen, John Ney Rieber, Jae Lee, Trevor Hairsine

Guys this is really bad.

Oh my god the racism.

I'm upset because the same writer did a BEAUTIFUL job of handling Captain America and 9-11 in The New Deal. And then this volume comes along and is awful and exploitive. Evil Native American shaman fighting Captain America. Cap being like "I'm sick of people trashing this country". Cap referring to "dark men". Oh my god.

When Native Peoples are rendered invisible at every turn in American media, it's pretty fucking shitty to represent Native struggles in such a violent and un-nuanced manner. While there's intention for this series to represent a grey area post 9-11, it was just not done well. The lack of understanding of /actual/ Native activism, the disrespect of religion (Thor's Norse connection with weather is treated as natural and right, whereas Redpath's powers over the weather, given by a Native God, are legitimately called "rape"), and basically everything just aggravated me the entire time.

Not pleasant. These comics were pretty hard to find- the NYPL doesn't have them in their system- and I honestly don't suggest going to great lengths to read them. Read New Deal. It's great. Skip this. Augh.
