Booth by Karen Joy Fowler
4.0

This is not a sympathetic portrait of an assassin, because that would be inappropriate. But, it is the story of his family, their struggles, triumphs and eccentricities, and of how much they loved him. Of course, one must never judge an entire family by the actions of one of its members, and they were hurt by his actions, too. And the social climate was crazy. So, it's complicated. There's a lot going on here.

As for the book, I liked the way it was put together. I appreciated the differing viewpoints and the wider historical perspective. The behaviors of many of the characters disappointed me, but people don't always do what we want them to.

This is the final installment of a self-curated, Lincoln-themed trilogy and it's probably the one I liked the best. I may have responded to it differently if I hadn't been in the middle of a deep dive.

(The audiobook is ok, not great. I'd recommend going hard copy on this one.)
