How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell

3.0

First a warning: if you've seen the film before reading this book then prepare yourself. The book is very, very different from the film.
That said, it's still an enjoyable romp. The book begins with the initiation of the youngsters in the Viking tribe. The initiation involves the youngsters going into a cave and getting their own first dragon as all the dragons sleep. See? I told you it was completely different!
As in the film, the book follows the Chieftan's son, Hiccup. Hiccup isn't very good at the normal Vikingly things such as shouting and fighting. He does like dragon-watching (which is forbidden) and can talk dragonese (which is also forbidden). However, despite being bullied by his cousin and having to put up with continuously disappointing his dad, HIccup's unique skills come in handy and eventually save the day.
To be honest, I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the film and maybe that's because my head was filled with the film so I kept spotting the differences. Treated entirely separately, though, and this is a good children's book and actually good fun. I shall probably continue to read through the series.
