Gallows Hill by Darcy Coates

3.5

Gallows Hill is a spooky little book about a haunted winery and a dark family curse. For the most part, it follows the basic outline of a classic ghost story and as much as that can be a thing to criticize, I think the familiarity also part of the charm. Old house, things going bump in the night, buried secrets. It's nothing new, but it's a proven formula.

Indeed, while my horror-loving heart may have craved for more twists and thrills, I can't say anything terribly bad about my reading of the book. The pacing is a little slow at first, but the story picks up around 50% and wraps up quite nicely in the end. And Darcy Coates writes pleasantly enough that I'd certainly be willing to pick up another book from her.

I consume horror all year long, but if a friend asked me for something atmospheric to read in the dark and gloomy nights in October-November that also wouldn't scar them for life, this would be what I'd recommend.
