Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin

3.0

3.5 Stars. Pretty good, but the movie was creepier.

I did enjoy this reading and was drawn in to Rosemary's dilemma of who to believe, who to trust, who to confide in. She really had no one, due to her own fault...or maybe society's? In the 60s and 70s, women had come a long way, but not far enough it seems. People came into her life and she allowed them to, regardless of the hovering, nosy and controlling natures. She allowed her husband to exact control and discounted her own feelings continuously throughout the book. I usually don't like to read about the poor, defenseless little woman in a novel; it irks me to no end; but I don't feel like Rosemary had a fair shot. I think she did the best she could with what she was given, and the era in which she lived. She tried to protect her health, but moreso the health of her unborn child that she prayed for.

The ending ...well, I was taken aback.
Spoiler she bonded and cooed at this thing, that was not a child. She became a protective and diligent mother to this being that came from her body, and loved it.
I don't think I could have done the same. I feel like I need to read the sequel to see how Rosemary handles the situation and the excerpt at the back of the book did not help with my curiosity; it only fanned the flames.

This was an interesting read that had me wondering how Rosemary would handle her emotions, thoughts and issues in this time..... mmmm?
