The Sacred Veil by Christopher Pike

3.0

While Pike's Thirst/Last Vampire series isn't your traditional YA vampire series, it's definitely entertaining (at least in my opinion). The series follows a five-thousand year old vampire named Sita who is definitely bad-ass, but can also be a bit cold-hearted and well, inhuman, sometimes. She's grown throughout the series though and she seems a bit more compassionate with each book though, so that's good.

The Sacred Veil follows Sita, Seymore, Matt, and the rest of the gang on a quest to find a very important artifact that played a role in Sita's past and is important to keep out of evil hands. Throughout the story we get some flashbacks of a few different significant events in Sita's life and in the present they try to track down the Veil and those who seek to take control of it.

While I enjoyed reading this, in particular the flashbacks, it didn't feel like the story was as thought out as the previous novels and for that reason I didn't enjoy it as much. While Pike is known for twists and turns within this series, and sometimes they seem like attempts to back-track and change the story to take it in a new direction, this novel felt a little random at times. I wasn't even entirely sure by the end of it what Sita's role in the whole scenario really was. She's told she is the "key to saving the world". But how? Why? That was never really explained. That part of the plot was just kind of all over the place.

I did like how Pike tied together a few loose ends from previous novels in the series. Even though I don't really think he necessarily intended to go in the direction the story went in, I do like that he found a way to make sense of some of the seemingly jumbled plots from previous books. I'm not sure if Pike really has a direction he's going in with this series, but I have a feeling he doesn't and is just trying to keep Sita's character alive as long as possible. This isn't really a bad thing per se, but it might make the overarching plot for the series seem directionless at times.

Overall this was a good book if you're a fan of the series and are attached to the characters. I wouldn't say that this is one of my favorite series or anything, but it has a unique vibe to it that's hard to explain but mostly has to do with Pike's writing style and the spiritual (non-religious) undertones. This vibe is probably what keeps me coming back more than anything else. That and the cliff-hanger endings! lol Speaking of which: At least Sita wasn't killed off again. lol But, I don't want Matt to cease existing either! No! But seriously...I doubt that will happen. I think the whole "Abomination" thing will probably be the next storyline. Who knows, maybe Matt will become the enemy. Although I really hope not. :(
