All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
4.0
The quote, “War does not determine who is right—only who is left,” resonates deeply throughout the narrative. The author depicts the senselessness of war, emphasizing that it ultimately yields survivors rather than victors. War leaves traumatized remnants of young men who initially held romanticized views of the bravery of war, but they are instead left fragile and scarred. This was one classic I hadn’t read and while it’s a marvelous piece of work, it’s horrifying and I admittedly skipped some of the gruesome descriptions.
