Fortune's Pawn
by Rachel Bach
I love this one. There has been a lot of flailing involved while reading this book.
I love Devi and her being a kickass, BAMF Merc who loves her armour and names her weapons (and armour suit). I love her. I love her. I love her. So much. I love the way she takes names and gets stuff down and still has a bit of a vulnerable side. I love that she doesn't give up even when faced with huge odds against her. I love that she is loyal but still thinks for herself. I love that she makes mistakes and tries to learn from them. I even didn't mind the H/C of her. :)
I love Rupert. OMG. He pushes some of my buttons when I interpret some of the hints the way I want them to. *meep* Just don't betray me. Or Devi.
The Captain and the rest of the crew? Interesting but unfortunately we don't learn that much about them in this book and I really, really, really hope that we get to know more about them in the next one. I'm so curious about Brian and Nova and Mabel and just everyone and everything. Also, they have a ship cat!
The worldbuilding. Interesting. Here we have a spacefaring society which has armoured suits, plasma weapons, artifical gravity and a ton of other stuff but their political system is feudal and the King is sacred. The aliens are also interesting (I mean, a bird like race as pilot/navigator or the xith'cal who can chose which gender they are (or chose not to have one) and the lelgis which are basical a kind of space whales/squids/whatever with no gender and some other pretty cool characteristics? And the whole thing with Rupert & Co? *loves*)
The story itself at first looks like a typical "mercenary fighting invaders/stuff" story but the further you get the more mystery is there and the more curious about everything I have been. Especially when Brenton showed up and I haven't beeen sure anymore who is the "good guy" and who the "bad guy" and maybe there are no "good guys"? I'm sooooo curious about everything and what the endgoal of Captain Caldswell is and how everything will be resolved.
My ususal complaint - there could have been a bit less romance. ;) But, since it saved Devis life in the end, I shouldn't complain about it too much, should I? ;)
All in all, this is a great read and I'm really, really, really looking forward to the next parts (and given how chess seems to play some kind of part in it and how the following books are named? GIMME!).
